How to create a residential list

The following questions are designed to guide your thought process to create a targeted mailing list:

  1. How many pieces will be mailed and in what intervals?
  2. What is the purpose of the mailing?
  3. What is the geographic reach of the mailing?
    1. In state only or across multiple states (such as a metro area)
    2. A specific zip code
    3. County wide
    4. Saturate a neighborhood
    5. Within a specific mile radius around a central location
  4. To whom are you mailing? Examples may be:
    1. Males or Females
    2. Families with children under the age of 10 years old
    3. Homes worth at least $250,000
    4. Household incomes over $150,000
    5. People with homes older than 5 years

The answers will determine which selection criteria should be used to generate your list. The number of criteria used to create your list has no bearing on the cost. Cost is dictated by the type of fields delivered in the output list.

Geographic Radius Search

A radius search produces records within a specific mile radius around a center location. Radius marketing is most effective for local businesses and services whose core clientele reside within a specific distance from their base of operations.

To start, we need the Latitude and Longitude of the center location. Use the free USGS National Atlas to find the Latitude and Longitude of an address. On the Maporama home page, select USA as the country, enter the address, and click “go.” The Latitude and Longitude will be in the bottom left-hand corner under the “Information” title bar.
